My tempeh has black spots - is it safe to eat?

Our tempeh is typically a beautiful white all around the edges but sometimes black or grey spots or patches can form. This is completely normal and does not indicate spoilage. When the fermentation process is complete, the culture we use to make tempeh goes from white to black.

Is your tempeh organic?

We only use organic soya beans to make our tempeh. When we use British pulses to make tempeh, we will aim for organic wherever possible. We will always indicate clearly whether beans are organic or not.

How do I cook tempeh?

You can steam tempeh, marinade and then fry or bake, throw it straight into the pan with a coconut curry or bolognese: tempeh is incredibly versatile and will absorb flavours very quickly. Recipes coming very soon on this website…

How long does tempeh keep for?

We blast freeze our tempeh to lock in nutrition, and because chilled tempeh would continue fermenting en route! We will only send you tempeh with a minimum of 1 month before it’s best before date.

How is it packaged?

Our tempeh comes in a certified home compostable bag (which breaks down in 26 weeks at ambient temperature) and then wrapped in recyclable brown craft paper. on the outside, with a home compostable inner.

We currently use both recycled denim liners, and cemp liners (plant based wool alternative) to keep your tempeh cool. These are both compostable, and come in a recyclable cover (to be taken to large supermarket plastic bag recycling points).

The ice packs (where used) can be reused often (very handy for a picnic) or you can cut off the end, pour away the contents in the sink (it's non-toxic) and recycle the plastic at large supermarket plastic bag recycling points).

We are working on a solution to return our liners and ice packs to us for reuse - watch this space!
